SAT R&W: Inferences

Mycorrhizal fungi form dense webs of thread-like filaments around and inside the roots of most land plants, exchanging mineral nutrients — particularly phosphorus — for carbohydrates that the plant produces through photosynthesis. Studies using isotope-labelling techniques have demonstrated that carbon fixed by one tree can appear within hours in the roots of a neighbouring tree, even when the two trees belong to different species.
